history ---
Alliyah’s need for attention and alcohol may stem from her absent father, or perhaps a mother who is too occupied with her new husband and four young children to pay attention to her oldest, “oopsie” daughter, the product of a one night stand at the age of 16. Alliyah’s father was in and out of her life as a child, sometimes coming for birthdays or Christmas, always looking thin, tired, and broke. Side effects of heroin. Alliyah’s mother never kept her father’s drug use a secret from her. She knew why his eyes were red, why his bones showed through his skin, why his arms were covered in small bruises. He showed up for her 14th birthday high as a kite, embarrassing her in front of her friends and crush. She hasn’t seen him since then. For all she knows, he’s dead or in jail.
She started smoking cigarettes at 13, was drinking by 15. Her mother, busy with soccer practice, ballet practice, daycare, didn’t notice the change in her daughter. She did notice Alliyah’s first tattoo, Mi Vida Loca on her shoulder that she got at 15. She attempted to discipline the daughter she had ignored for the past few years, and her and Alliyah’s stepfather sent her to her grandmother’s house for a year. This changed nothing in Alliyah’s mind; she resents her mother, hates her stepfather. The only thing her grandmother did was arouse her interest in her father. Alliyah has made several attempts to find him, all the while being discouraged by her mother.
