history ---
Gray's age of 32 years and the lack of a wife caused great pain within the traditional Dunehams. Martin grew suspicious, and one day he and his oldest son, while in the forest hunting, became involved in an argument. The culmination of said argument ended with Martin shouting in frustration and anger that he would not have a gay son.
Grayson took his leave later that year. His mother, acceptant and ever-loving of her son, wept and his sisters pleaded with him not to leave. It was James and Martin who stood off, Martin hurt and loving of his son, but refusing to make amends.
Due to this arrogance on his father's part, Gray threw away the last name Duneham and took Thomas, the first name of his mother's grandfather.
Upon reaching Hawaii, he met a boy named Phineas, one who allowed Gray to acknowledge and accept the emotions that rose in him. Before Phineas, the man had only allowed himself the briefest of trysts, but there was no love in them. Gray and Phineas parted ways before the former could inform the latter of his abiding affection.
He returned home and was welcomed by his mother. Despairing of recreating that feeling with anyone else, Gray allowed his parents to introduce him to the daughter of a family friend. One thing led to another and he had fallen into a marriage he did not want.
Reconciled with his parents, yet married to a woman who had no knowledge of his inclinations, Gray threw himself into his work. It was around the time that Molly began to pine for children that he knew he must escape her for a time, to rearrange his thoughts. Conveniently, his business whisked him off to Hawaii before Molly could pressure him into that conversation. And so here he is again, confused, all but ruined, attempting to resign himself to his fate even as he searches for the oceanic blue of that boy's eyes.
