alarm clocks were never shafer augustine's favorite thing. though he always had one and always set it. however, the boy always set the clock to around five thirty in the evening. this was normal for shafer, his mom would always say that boys needed more sleep. he would get his sleep in the early morning and the evening. on this particular day, shafer was planning on getting up his usual time, getting dressed, and going to the boardwalk where he would sit on the old driftwood and strum on his guitar for a few hours. the boy did this on a daily basis before going out to surf, he thought of it as soothing.
the second the alarm clock went off, shafer's hand was already plummeting to the off button. after five more minutes he threw the covers from him, let his feet meet the ground, and finally stood up. shafer stretched carefully before entering the bathroom that was connected to his room, and turned on the shower. the water hitting the shower floor was the same sound that broke the silence whenever shafer woke up. he jumped in for about five minutes, he never wanted to waste more time than needed in the shower. upon getting out, he dried quickly, and began blow drying his hair. after ten minutes he was back to his room, getting dressed. he choose to wear black skinnies, a black tshirt that said 'hurley' across it in white letters, a red straight brimmed hat, and black vans. after checking his appearance shafer made his way downstairs, and out to the garage.
his choice of car would always be his 1968 camaro, at least until it died. the boardwalk wasn't too far from his large penthouse, he enjoyed that he could get to any place he wanted in less than ten minutes. upon entering the parking lot, it was packed. shafer grinned as he pulled into a spot, and turned off the engine. he hopped out of the drivers seat and carefully opened the trunk. inside was his travel guitar and a small stool. a simple deep chestnut color acoustic that he brought everywhere with him. the boy shut the trunk lid, and proceeded to walk through the parking lot and up onto the boardwalk. the boy found a nice open spot, propped up his stool and sat down. he began playing softly, warming up before he would begin singing along.

ryatt had been feeling sick from the moment she had woken up. her headache grew as the minutes passed and soon became hours. her stomach felt as though it were doing flips inside her well toned lower torso and the mere smell of food caused her to gag. mentally, she swore at herself for drinking so much. the young girl knew she needed to learn her limits, it was a matter of learning how to do so that was an issue. she told her sister it was probably just the flu but kaylin knew much better than that. she rolled her eyes and walked off, leaving ryatt alone in the house for what felt like the millionth time. ryatt didn't mind being alone so much. she had gotten used to it over the years and yet lately it was nagging at her. she knew she had to go out and meet people. she had been in town for over three weeks and still knew no one other than an older man working at the gas station. bravo.
with a heavy sigh she forced herself out of bed. she grabbed her simple black bikini and tugged on a pair of dark denim shorts. as if in slow motion, she searched her room for black flip flops which eventually she remembered were in the living room by the couch. she walked out there and found them instantly just where she had left them. good to know i didn't black out i guess. she mumbled, mostly to herself but also to the blue macaw who sat on top of his white iron cage. the bird squacked but said nothing. yeah, yeah, fuck you too. she replied as she stuck her tongue out at the annoyingly loud creature and left the room. hopefully kingdom, the macaw, wouldn't start squacking for attention or food. ryatt was not in the mood for the pesky parrot.
inside the kitchen she forced herself to eat a bowl of cereal and a banana before grabbing her beach bag and heading out the back door. she grabbed her black and pink surfboard and began the walk to the beach. the hot sun fell against her pale features. she definitely stood out along the locals or others who had been there for years. she knew eventually she would get as tan as them, but for the moment she looked like the city slicker she really was - besides the board. she had learned to surf over the years of going to florida every summer. she was actually incredibly thankful to be out of the city and by the ocean for a change. as she smelled the air she forgot the city. she was intrigued with the smell of salt water rather than plagued air of gasoline and what ever else stunk up the area. the sight and sound of crashing waves up ahead got her to smile, forgetting more and more about the buildings blocking the view or the crowds of people.
she didn't make it to the sand though. something distracted her up ahead. it was the sound of music, and who ever was playing was damn good at it. her soft green eyes searched the area and she spotted the person on the boardwalk. she stood there in the parking lot for quite some time before deciding this was her chance. she inhaled deeply, adjusting her grip on the surf board, and moved forward. she was getting closer and closer to the guy and before she knew it she was close enough to speak. not bad. she stated with a sly grin. the man was attractive and a part of ryatt feeled as though he'd be a cocky prick who would just ignore her. still, it was worth a shot. ryatt was sick of being the newbie with no friends. she had do something about it and this guy was her first attempt at getting to know someone.

shafer scanned the boardwalk casually as he strummed the cords of his guitar peacefully. the song was not a worthy one, just one he had came up with on the spot with putting random chords he liked together with a few twists added in. the boy sighed gently, disappointed at the lack of cute girls roaming the boardwalk today. it had been a few days since he had hooked up with someone and was looking for something new. someone like him who would know the game he played and throw it right back at him. shafer thought back aimlessly to the one girl he went steady with for a while, her name was amy. this was the one girl that shafer had actually liked and wanted to keep around until she tore out his heart, spit on it, shredded it up, threw it on the ground, and stomped on it. the boy was of course devastated, but this was the start of his drunken womanizer phase. that night that she broke up with him he went out got drunk and brought home two different girls.
the boy gave up on love because he believed it failed him. no one since that had changed anything for him so his ways as a womanizer have kept up. shafer continued to gaze as he began strumming the rather familiar chords to the song "situations" by escape the fate. he began thinking of getting up from his seat and heading back to his car to get his surfboard when a girl appeared. fiery colored hair and a surfboard. shafer's kind of girl. the boy bit his bottom lip and prepared to be charming. she started getting closer from what shafer could see out of the corner of his eye and a small grin began to appear on his face. not bad were the first words out of this girls mouth. shafer would play along carefully, i know. he flicked his hair to the side and looked up through the shags of hair that had refused to be flung to the side.
he shifted his weight from one side to the other, his butt was beginning to fall asleep. after strumming a few chords shafer set the guitar down beside him and rested his elbows on the upper parts of his thighs. so who are you? the boy questioned. never seen you around. i'm shafer by the way. shafer augustine. shafer did that cute sideways grin and offered her his hand.

the fare skinned girl couldn't help but to watch with gleaming green eyes as he strummed the guitar. his fingers knew what they were doing. ryatt neither smiled nor frowned, but simply watched until he made his comment. it was cocky but in a way he deserved it. "not bad" rang through her head. she swallowed down the urge to roll her eyes and walk off, feeling as though he'd be the type of prick she encountered in the city of philidelphia all the time. she swore to herself that she wouldn't get stuck in that crowd ever again. she wanted to shake herself clean of her old habits, get rid of the cocky attitude, and begin a new life. she sighed a little but when he put down the guitar and introduced himself, ryatt couldn't help but to smile ear to ear. so he wasn't a complete jerk, the girl thought to herself as she admired his attractive grin. he definitely had the looks that ryatt couldn't resist.
it took her a second to stop staring and realize she was supposed to introduce herself too. she laughed a little as her cheeks flushed a slight pink tint. sorry, i'm ryatt. she didn't extend a hand to him but he hadn't offered his either. besides, ryatt wasn't the type to shake hands as if they were about to be business partners or two lawyers agreeing to work together on a case. no, they were just two people in a beautiful town getting to know one another. i'm new to town actually. been here about three weeks. so i guess i'm not too new, just haven't gotten out yet. she stated, remembering what he had said about not seeing her about. the town seemed small enough where people would know one another or at least be able to notice faces. ryatt was the newbie and she knew she'd stand out as one. the only time she went out was to go to the beach and that was usually during the sunrise.
her body weight shifted a little bit and her hand adjusted on the heavy surf board. she looked out to the ocean and noticed the perfect swell rising and falling onto the shore. kids could be heard yelling to each other and as always seagulls begged for food high above in the baby blue sky. ryatt didn't observe the scene behind shafer for long before she looked back at him. her smile was still on her face. mind if i sit for a bit? might as well rest up before i head out there. the girl's head nodded to the sea behind him. without waiting for his response she balanced the board so it leaned on the railing and slumped down on the wooden boardwalk, her legs straight out in front of her. she looked up to shafer and smiled some more. you surf? her head cocked to the side, her dyed red hair in its pony tail flopping over as she stared up at him with bright green eyes.
